Newcastle United Football Club

Newcastle United is the professional football club located in Newcastle, England. The club came into existence in 1892 after the union of both Newcastle West End and Newcastle East End. Since then, they have been playing at the St James’s Park, a 52,000+ Stadium located in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Prior to the transformation of all stadiums in England to the all-seater configuration, St James’s Park had a total capacity of 60,000. Newcastle United enjoyed a lot of success during the 1960s, when they won the Intertoto cup.

Historically, Newcastle have had a lot of success during their initial years, when they won the league three times within a span of 10 years. They came close to winning the FA Cup in 1904 and in 1906, but ended up losing both of the finals. Finally, they won the FA Cup by beating Barnsley in 2010. The club managed to win the league three times within 10 years, but they had to wait until 1926-27 for their next title in League. Newcastle are amongst the few clubs who have not dropped out of the second tier of English football.

Their most recent relegation came in 2009, but they have recovered and are back in the Premier League. Newcastle were one of the first teams to be promoted to the Premier League back when it was formed in 1994. It began a short era in the history of the club in which they were highly successful. With then owner Freddy Shepherd bankrolling the club, Newcastle United finished in second position in 1995. Kevin Keegan’s attacking philosophy produced great results, and also inconsistent results. After Keegan left in 1997, it brought an end to a great era within the club’s history.

It was during this time that Newcastle broke the British transfer record by signing Alan Shearer from Blackburn for a transfer fee of £ 15 million. Shearer became one of the club’s legend, and also the all-time top scorer in the Premier League.

Newcastle are well known for their black-and-white striped jerseys. It has come from the Newcastle East End, who adopted the colours back in 1894. The club currently uses the crest that was initially formed in 1988. Newcastle are fierce rivals with Sunderland and Middlesbrough, although it is more towards the former band of the latter. So far, the club has won four first division titles, six FA cups, one UEFA Intertoto Cup, one Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, one Anglo-Italian Cup. Notable people who have managed Newcastle include Sir Bobby Robson, Joe Harvey, and Kevin Keegan. Jimmy Lawrence currently holds the record for having made the most appearances for Newcastle, which stands at 496. Shay Given, Alan Shearer, Peter Beardsley, and Nolberto Solano have made more than 300 appearances for the club. In total, Newcastle have spent 80 seasons in the top division, which is among the highest.
